Itzel Flores Castillo Wang, or Lucerito as her grandma and grandpa fondly call her, was born and raised in Ahuatepec, Tecali de Herrera, Puebla, Mexico until she was 8-years-old. In 2001, along with her little sister, her mom, and tia, they embarked on a journey to the United States to reunite with her dad in Los Angeles. She currently resides in East LA, though she also lived in Boyle Heights for many years prior.
For Itzel, her journey into the organizing world unknowingly began during the May Day marches that occurred in 2006. Being undocumented, and having a family who was also undocumented, this march marked a significant moment in her life when she realized just how many more people were experiencing the same situation, and how much work there was to ensure systems were changing for the better. Since that day, a passion for helping others and ensuring their voices are being heard began to grow within her.

Itzel graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a B.A. in Environmental Studies with a focus on Anthropology in 2018. In 2010, after completing one-quarter of her undergraduate studies, Itzel had to make the hard decision of taking a leave of absence from school due to not having the financial stability to continue with her studies. Nonetheless, she was eventually able to return to school in 2015, and it was this journey that re-sparked and reinforced her true passion for what she wanted to do for her communities.

Since then, during her undergraduate studies and after, Itzel has continued to become involved with organizations such as the Rising Voices Center for Indigenous and Earth Sciences, the Disaster Justice Network, East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice, and lastly, Promesa Boyle Heights, with whom she is now beginning a new journey as an organizer. With this new role, Itzel hopes to continue working on the issues affecting black, indigenous, people of color, the queer community, underrepresented communities, students, families, and many more who continue to fight every day to make sure their voices and needs are heard and met.

In her free time, Itzel's other passion lies in dancing, spending time with family, and enjoying delicious food. Her main form of dance is Mexican Folklorico, which she has been doing for almost 20 years, and one day hopes to be able to have her own Folklorico group.
Itzel Flores Castillo Wang, o Lucerito como su abuelito y abuelita la llaman cariñosamente, nació y creció en Ahuatepec, Tecali de Herrera, Puebla, México hasta los 8 años de edad. En el 2001, junto a su hermana, su mama, y tia, embarcaron en una jornada hacia los Estados Unidos para reunirse con su papá en Los Ángeles. Actualmente, vive en el Este de Los Ángeles, aunque también vivió en Boyle Heights por muchos años.
Para Itzel, su jornada al mundo de organizadoras empezó sin que se diera cuenta, durante las marchas del Día de Mayo que ocurrieron en el 2006. Siendo indocumentada, y teniendo familia quienes también eran indocumentados, esta marcha marcó un punto significante en su vida al darse cuenta cuantas muchas personas habían quienes estaban en la misma situación, y cuánto trabajo aún se necesitaba para cambiar los sistemas para lo mejor. Desde ese día, su pasión por ayudar a otros y asegurarse que sus voces sean escuchadas, empezó a crecer dentro de ella.

Itzel se graduó de la Universidad de California, Santa Barbara con un B.A. en Estudios Ambientales con un énfasis en Antropología en el 2018. En el 2010, después de completar un semestre en la escuela, Itzel tuvo que tomar la difícil decisión de tomar un descanso de la escuela debido a que no tenía la seguridad económica para continuar sus estudios. Sin embargo, eventualmente pudo regresar a la escuela en el 2015, y fue esta jornada lo que prendió otra vez y reforzó su pasión verdadera por lo que quería hacer por sus comunidades.

Desde entonces, durante sus estudios y después, Itzel ha seguido involucrándose con organizaciones como Rising Voices Centro para Ciencias Indígenas y de la Tierra, Disaster Justice Network (Red de Justicia Antes Desastres), East Yard Comunidades para Justicia Ambiental, y finalmente, Promesa Boyle Heights, con quien ahora está empezando una nueva etapa como organizadora. Con este nuevo rol, Itzel quiere seguir trabajando en cuestiones que afectan las comunidades negras, indígenas, personas de colo, la comunidad de LGBTQ+, comunidades no representadas, estudiantes, familias y muchos mas quienes siguen la lucha todos los días para que sus voces y necesidades sean escuchadas y satisfechas.

Durante su tiempo libre, a Itzel le encanta bailar, pasar tiempo con su familia, y disfrutar de comida deliciosa. Su forma de baile favorita es el folklorico Mexicano, el cual ha bailado por casi 20 años, y el cual espera algún día poder llegar a tener su propio grupo de folklorico.
