Summer Melt Initiative at Roosevelt High School
July 27, 2018
On June 18th Promesa Boyle Heights teamed up with Roosevelt High School to work on summer melt initiatives and to promote a high school-to-college transition support system. After receiving an information session from Elizandro Umana of the College Promise office at ELAC, RHS academic counselors along with PBH Community School staff made phone calls and held in-person check-ins with students that were on their way to enrolling into a 2-4-year college program. About 70 alumnae were given support with the multi-step process of enrolling into a post-secondary institution.
On July 3rd, the community school team, led by RHS Community School Achievement Coordinator, Carolina Couto, presented to parents of incoming Rough Riders for the school's summer bridge program. 22 parents were in attendance as Carolina covered high school completion requisites and community-school resources, as well as coordinated an activity for parents to think about what they dream for their students. Promesa Boyle Heights' College and Career Coordinator, Alejandro, lead a presentation on college-prep guidance for students and parents. There was a question and answer session with Roosevelt AP Mr. Lynch, and a discussion on bridging emotional connections between parent/guardian and youth facilitated by Promesa Boyle Heights consultant Roberto Bustillo. The parents provided very positive feedback with one parent highlighting, "Toda la informacion fue fundamental para poder apoyar a mi hijo(a) en el futuro academico" (All of the information was fundamental to be able to support my son, daughter in their academic future).
