Career Day!

In the last month Promesa Boyle Heights hosted the sixth annual Career Day at Mendez High School and Launched the inaugural Career Day at Roosevelt High School. In total over 216 prfessionals attended both career days.

Mendez High School

On March 22nd Promesa Boyle Heights hosted it’s 6th annual Career Day at Mendez High School. It was the biggest attended Career Day to date with 116 professionals presenting in classrooms to over 1000 students school-wide. There were professionals from across the spectrum of career clusters such as; Fashion/Digital Art, Entertainment, Law Enforcement, Engineering, and Medicine to name a few. The event opened with an assembly for the graduating class of 2018. The keynote speaker for the assembly was Mandla Kayise, CEO of New World Education, and well known leader and innovator of student development in the Los Angeles area.

Weeks leading up to Career Day, students experienced presentations on Career Day and also filled out a career cluster aptitude test which matched their answers with careers that matched their results, afterwards students got to pick which presentations they wanted to participate in. They listed their top 3 choices and were placed in 2 sessions.

Mendez parents also got to experience a career themed workshop and activity session the week before Career Day. The workshop covered topics such as understanding the relationship between college majors and careers, specific career pathways for vocational and traditional careers, as well as hearing first hand experience from a former Mendez student and current CSULA student, as to how parents can be more supportive in their youth’s educational journey.

Roosevelt High School

Last month Roosevelt held their first annual Career Day. Over 100 professionals volunteered to speak with students in classes, and students were also treated to keynote presentations from Robert Zardeneta of LA CAUSA YouthBuild and Assembly District 51 representative Wendy Carrillo, a Roosevelt alumna.

Thank you to all the profeesionals that made the first ever Roosevelt career day possible.

Students were able to hear from proffessionalss in different fields and learn what it takes to become a working professional.

A Special thank you to Promesa College and Career Cordinator Alejandro Araujo, Community school Cordinators Carolina Cuoto and Iliana Garcia, and Community partners for their work in making these events possible!
