On March 22nd Promesa Boyle Heights hosted it’s 6th annual Career Day at Mendez High School. It was the biggest attended Career Day to date with 116 professionals presenting in classrooms to over 1000 students school-wide. There were professionals from across the spectrum of career clusters such as; Fashion/Digital Art, Entertainment, Law Enforcement, Engineering, and Medicine to name a few. The event opened with an assembly for the graduating class of 2018. The keynote speaker for the assembly was Mandla Kayise, CEO of New World Education, and well known leader and innovator of student development in the Los Angeles area.

Weeks leading up to Career Day, students experienced presentations on Career Day and also filled out a career cluster aptitude test which matched their answers with careers that matched their results, afterwards students got to pick which presentations they wanted to participate in. They listed their top 3 choices and were placed in 2 sessions.

Mendez parents also got to experience a career themed workshop and activity session the week before Career Day. The workshop covered topics such as understanding the relationship between college majors and careers, specific career pathways for vocational and traditional careers, as well as hearing first hand experience from a former Mendez student and current CSULA student, as to how parents can be more supportive in their youth’s educational journey.
